Talking Heads – True Stories
Artist: Talking Heads
Title: True Stories
Album Type: Seventh Studio Album (Original Vinyl Release)
Original Release Date: September 15, 1986
Label: Sire Records (Catalog: 1-25512)

Background & Production True Stories was released as a companion piece to David Byrne’s musical film of the same name. Unlike a traditional soundtrack where the film's actors sing the songs, this album features the Talking Heads performing the material themselves. Produced by the band and recorded at Sigma Sound in New York, the album represents a shift toward more straightforward, Americana-influenced pop and rock, moving away from the dense polyrhythms of their earlier 80s work.
Musical Composition & Style The album is characterized by its bright production and themes inspired by "tabloid" stories and small-town American life.
-
The Major Hit: "Wild Wild Life" became one of the band's most successful late-career singles, largely fueled by its popular and humorous music video.
-
Pop Melodicism: "And She Was" and "Love for Sale" demonstrate the band's ability to craft catchy, radio-friendly hooks while maintaining David Byrne’s eccentric lyrical perspective.
-
Americana Influence: Tracks like "People Like Us" and "City of Dreams" lean into country and folk structures, reflecting the Texas setting of the film project.
-
Sonic Clarity: The record features a clean, polished sound with prominent work from Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison, emphasizing a traditional four-piece band feel.
Original Pressing & Collector Notes The 1983-1986 era was the peak of Talking Heads' commercial power, making original pressings highly desirable for their mid-80s analog fidelity.
-
Identification: The original 1986 US pressing (Sire 1-25512) features the yellow Sire label.
-
Mastering: Most original US copies were mastered at Sterling Sound by Ted Jensen; look for the "STERLING" stamp in the runout groove.
-
The Sleeve: The original release came in a single sleeve with a printed inner sleeve that includes lyrics and credits. The cover art features a colorful, high-contrast photograph that mirrors the film's aesthetic.
-
Variants: While most copies are standard black vinyl, keep an eye out for European pressings (EMI/Parlophone) which sometimes offer slightly different tonal balances.
