Hunters & Collectors – Say Goodbye (from Human Frailty)

Artist: Hunters & Collectors

Title: Say Goodbye

Album: Human Frailty Release Date: 1986

Label: White Label / Mushroom Records

Genre: Australian Rock / Post-Punk / Pub Rock

Background & Production "Say Goodbye" is the opening track and lead single from the band's fourth studio album, Human Frailty. Recorded at St. Charles Studio in London with producer Gavin MacKillop, this track marked a significant shift in the band’s sound. They moved away from their earlier experimental, avant-garde industrial roots toward a more structured, soulful, and lyrically vulnerable style of rock.

Musical Composition The song is driven by the "Horns of Contempt," the band’s legendary brass section, which provides a melodic counterpoint to Mark Seymour's raw vocal delivery. It features a heavy, syncopated bassline from John Archer and a distinctive, muscular rhythmic pocket that became the hallmark of the Australian pub rock scene.

Lyrical Themes The lyrics explore the collapse of a domestic relationship, famously opening with a heated exchange: "You don't make me feel like I'm a woman anymore / Well, you don't make me feel like I'm a man." It is widely regarded as one of the most honest depictions of relationship friction in the Australian songbook.
