Background & Production What We See When We Shut Our Eyes is the second and final studio album from Sacramento-based outfit With Passion. After their debut on Earache, the band underwent a massive lineup overhaul, leaving guitarist Samuel Henderson as the sole original member. This album was recorded at Castle Ultimate Studios with producer Zack Ohren (renowned for his work with All Shall Perish and Animosity). The result was a significantly more technical, "neoclassical" approach to death metal that pushed the boundaries of the burgeoning "Sumerian-core" and tech-death scenes of the late 2000s.
Musical Composition & Style The album is a relentless display of technical proficiency, blending high-speed shredding with progressive structures.
-
The Sound: A hyper-fast mixture of Gothenburg-style melodic death metal and technical American death metal. It features constant sweeping arpeggios, complex drum patterns, and frequent time-signature shifts.
-
Key Tracks: "Pale Blue Dot" and "Vengeance in Our Veins" showcase the band's new dual-guitar attack and much tighter production compared to their debut.
-
Vocal Style: New vocalist Fidel Castro (yes, his real name) delivered a more versatile performance than previous members, ranging from high-pitched black metal rasps to deep, rhythmic growls.
-
Keyboard Integration: The album uses subtle orchestral and piano flourishes to enhance the "dark classical" atmosphere of the technical riffing.
Original CD & Collector Notes As a late-period Earache technical release, this CD has become a cult favorite for fans of the "Sacramento Sound."
-
Identification: The original 2003 US release was on Earache Records. Look for the MOSH 314CD catalog number on the spine.
-
The Artwork: The cover art is a striking, surrealist piece by Par Olofsson, a legendary artist in the death metal community (also known for his work with Spawn of Possession and Abysmal Dawn). It features a "mind's eye" concept that fits the album title.
-
Matrix Info: Original pressings typically feature the
MOSH314CDmatrix string and were manufactured in the US or UK depending on the distribution territory. -
Status: The band broke up shortly after the release of this album, making original physical copies the only way to own the final chapter of their short but influential career.
