Background & Production "Bittersweet" was the second major single released from Fuel's multi-platinum debut studio album, Sunburn. Following the massive success of "Shimmer," this track helped solidify the band's presence on rock radio in the late 90s. Produced by Steven Haigler and mixed by Tom Lord-Alge, the song captures the signature "crunchy" yet melodic sound that defined the post-grunge era. The track was a staple of the band's live set during the peak of the Brett Scallions era and peaked at #15 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

Musical Composition & Style The single showcases the band's ability to balance heavy, distorted guitar riffs with accessible, radio-friendly hooks.

  • The Sound: Driven by Carl Bell’s aggressive rhythm guitar and Brett Scallions’ gritty, passionate vocals, the song explores themes of cynical outlooks and the "bittersweet" nature of reality.

  • Acoustic Variations: Many versions of the CD single feature "Studio Acoustic" versions of "Bittersweet" and "Shimmer," which highlight the band’s strong melodic foundations stripped of their heavy distortion.

  • Rhythm Section: Features the tight interplay of bassist Jeff Abercrombie and session drummer Jonathan Mover (who performed on the Sunburn sessions, though Kevin Miller appeared in the music video and tour).

Original CD & Collector Notes There are several distinct versions of the original CD single that collectors look for depending on their region.

  • US Radio Promo: The "True" first pressing is often considered the US Promo CD (BSK 41330), which comes in a standard jewel case with unique "Promo Only" artwork. It typically contains only the title track.

  • Australian Maxi-Single: Released in 1999 (Catalog: 667123 2), this is highly prized by collectors as it includes five tracks: the album version, a studio acoustic version, and live acoustic versions of "Shimmer" and "Jesus or a Gun."

  • European Slimline: Often found in a J-card jewel case, these usually feature 2 or 3 tracks and were used for European radio and retail.

  • Identification: Look for the 550 Music logo (an imprint of Epic/Sony) which was the band's label home during their most successful years.
