Red Hot Chili Peppers – Knock Me Down (7" Single)

Artist: Red Hot Chili Peppers

Title: Knock Me Down / Show Me Your Soul

Format: 7" Vinyl Single

Original Release: 1989

Label: EMI / EMI USA

The "Deep Dive" Details:

  • The "Hillel Slovak" Tribute: This track is one of the most significant in RHCP history, written about the death of original guitarist Hillel Slovak and Anthony Kiedis’ struggle with addiction. For collectors, the 7" represents the first commercial success of the Frusciante/Smith lineup, marking the birth of the band's most famous era.

  • The "Shared Vocal" Mix: The 7" version features a specific mix where John Frusciante’s backing vocals are almost as loud as (and sometimes louder than) Anthony Kiedis’ lead. On later remasters and digital versions, Frusciante was often turned down. Fans of the "Frusciante sound" hunt for the original vinyl specifically to hear this raw, high-register harmony mix.

  • The Rare Australian "Sample" Pressing (23667): If you are in Australia, look for the EMI USA label (Catalog: 23667). A true promo/sample copy will have "Sample Record - Not For Sale" printed in small text on the label. Unlike the US version, which came in a generic sleeve, the Australian 7" was often distributed in a unique picture sleeve with a bright, "graffiti-style" aesthetic that is prone to heavy edge wear.

  • The B-Side Rarity: "Show Me Your Soul": This B-side is a major "buy trigger." It was not on the Mother's Milk album; it was recorded for the Pretty Woman Soundtrack. Because it was an "orphan" track for years, the 7" single was one of the only ways to own it on vinyl. It features a heavy funk-rock groove that bridge the gap between their punk-funk roots and their future mainstream sound.

  • Matrix / Runout - "Mastered by Liberty": Check the runout for a Liberty or EMI stamp. Many of these were mastered at Capitol Mastering in LA. Look for the small "S" or "SRC" logo, indicating a high-quality pressing from the Specialty Records Corporation, known for superior vinyl durability compared to standard late-80s "thin" wax.
