Background & Production Thank You is the eighth studio album by Duran Duran, a project consisting almost entirely of cover versions. Coming off the massive success of the 1993 "Wedding Album," the band intended this record as a tribute to their influences. Recorded between 1992 and 1994, it was produced by the band alongside John Jones. The project was famously arduous, involving multiple studios (including a portable setup in the South of France) and numerous rejected mixes. Lou Reed famously stated that the band's version of his song "Perfect Day" was the best cover of any of his songs he had ever heard.

Musical Composition & Style The album is a diverse and sometimes polarizing collection that sees the band tackling everything from 70s glam to early 90s hip-hop.

  • The Standout Singles: Features a lush, orchestral cover of Lou Reed’s "Perfect Day" and a high-energy, funky version of Grandmaster Flash’s "White Lines (Don't Do It)," which features the original rappers Melle Mel and Grandmaster Flash.

  • Eclectic Range: Covers include "911 Is a Joke" (Public Enemy), "Lay Lady Lay" (Bob Dylan), and "Crystal Ship" (The Doors).

  • The Title Track: A cover of Led Zeppelin’s "Thank You," which also appeared on the Encomium tribute album.

  • Guest Musicians: The album features a heavy-hitting roster of drummers, including Terry Bozzio, Steve Ferrone, and Tony Thompson, plus Lee Oskar on harmonica.

Original CD & Collector Notes As a mid-90s major label release, several specific versions exist for collectors.

  • US Pressing: Issued by Capitol Records (Catalog: CDP 7243 8 29419 2 7). Look for the "Printed in U.S.A." text and the Capitol logo on the disc and spine.

  • UK/European Pressing: Issued by Parlophone (Catalog: 7243 8 31879 2 8). Many European copies feature a distinct yellow hub design on the disc itself.

  • Japanese Edition: Highly prized as it includes two bonus tracks: "Femme Fatale" (The Velvet Underground) and "Diamond Dogs" (David Bowie).

  • The "Club Edition": Many US copies found today are BMG Direct or Columbia House club editions. While musically identical, purists often prefer the standard retail versions without the club branding on the back insert.
