Spencer Davis Group - The Best Of Spencer Davis Group Featuring Steve Winwood

Artist: Spencer Davis Group Title: The Best Of Spencer Davis Group Featuring Steve Winwood Format: Vinyl LP (Australian Pressing) Original Australian Release: 1967 Label: Festival Records / Island Records Genre: Rock / Rhythm and Blues

The Deep Dive Details:

  • The 1967 First Press: The original Australian first pressing was released on the Festival Records label (Catalog Number: SFL-932,736). It features a high-gloss flipback sleeve, where the cardboard edges are folded over and glued to the outside of the back cover. This flipback design is the primary indicator of a true 1960s original.

  • The Island Label Transition: In 1970, the album was re-released on the pink or palm tree Island Records labels (Catalog Number: L 32,736). While the sleeve may still carry the 1967 or 1970 date, the label design tells the story. A pink Island label is significantly more valuable to collectors than the later blue or yellow variants.

  • Matrix and Runout Info: Check the dead wax for the SMX matrix codes, which are the hallmark of Festival Studios in Sydney. Side A: SMX25491 Side B: SMX25492 If you see these codes, the record was cut and pressed in Australia using local metal parts.

  • The Mono vs. Stereo Mystery: Most Australian first pressings (SFL-932,736) are labelled as Stereo but often contain Mono mixes of tracks like I am a Man and Gimme Some Lovin. Audiophiles hunt for these specific Australian cuts because they are known for a punchy, mid-range heavy sound that suits Steve Winwood's vocals better than later true-stereo remixes.

  • The Jackie Edmunds Typo: On many Australian labels and back covers, the songwriter for Keep On Running is misspelled as J. Edmunds instead of Jackie Edwards. This typo is a classic quirk of the Australian production run and is a great detail to include in your listing to prove authenticity.

  • The Island Life Reissue: In the late 1980s, a budget reissue was released as part of the Island Life Collection (Catalog Number: L 19069). This version lacks the flipback sleeve and usually has a barcode on the back. While it sounds excellent, it carries a much lower market value than the 1967 or 1970 versions.  Keywords: Spencer Davis Group, Steve Winwood, Best Of, Vinyl LP, 1967, Australian Pressing, Festival Records, Island Records, SFL-932736, L 32736, Flipback Sleeve, Gimme Some Lovin, Keep On Running.
