Background & Production Released two years before their famous Stop Making Sense concert film, The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads serves as a definitive live document of the band's rapid evolution between 1977 and 1981. The title itself is a cheeky nod to David Byrne’s minimalist stage introductions—"The name of this song is..."—and the band's insistence on excluding the definite article "The" from their name. Produced by the band members themselves, the album captures the group at two distinct peaks: the lean, nervous energy of their early years and the expansive, polyrhythmic funk of their later collaboration with Brian Eno.
Musical Composition The album is split into two distinct eras that showcase the band's growth:
-
Disc One (1977–1979): Features the original quartet (Byrne, Weymouth, Frantz, Harrison). The recordings are characterized by a "cleaner," more urgent sound than the studio versions, focusing on tracks from Talking Heads: 77 and More Songs About Buildings and Food. It includes the first official release of the fan-favorite track "A Clean Break."
-
Disc Two (1980–1981): Captures the expanded 10-piece touring lineup following the release of Remain in Light. This version of the band integrated legendary musicians like Adrian Belew (guitar) and Bernie Worrell (keyboards). The sound here is dense, rhythmic, and tribal, featuring extended versions of "The Great Curve" and "Crosseyed and Painless" that highlight the band's exploration of Afrobeat and funk.
Critical Reception While often overshadowed by the visual spectacle of Stop Making Sense, many hardcore fans and critics consider this the superior audio document of the band’s live prowess. It reached #31 on the Billboard 200 and #22 in the UK, eventually receiving a massive 33-track expanded reissue in 2004 that nearly doubled its original length.
