Background & Production III: In the Eyes of Fire is the third studio album from Massachusetts metalcore pioneers Unearth. Following the massive success of The Oncoming Storm, the band recruited legendary producer Terry Date (known for his work with Pantera, Deftones, and White Zombie) to capture a rawer, more aggressive sound. Recorded at Studio X in Seattle, the album was a commercial success, debuting at #35 on the Billboard 200. It marked a shift toward a darker, thrash-heavy aesthetic while maintaining the dual-guitar harmonies that defined the New Wave of American Heavy Metal.

Musical Composition & Style The album is often cited as the band's most "brutal" offering, leaning heavily into their Slayer and Pantera influences.

  • The Anthems: Openers "This Glorious Nightmare" and "Giles" (based on the story of Giles Corey from the Salem Witch Trials) became immediate fan favorites and live staples.

  • Technicality: The guitar duo of Buz McGrath and Ken Susi pushed their limits on tracks like "Sanctity of Brothers," blending melodic death metal leads with punishing hardcore breakdowns.

  • The "Big Bear" Instrumental: The closing track, "Big Bear and the Hour of Chaos," was famously recorded in a single hour while the band was consuming "Big Bear" malt liquor.

  • Drum Performance: This was the final studio album to feature drummer Mike Justian, whose high-speed precision and "tumbling" fills are a highlight of tracks like "March of the Mutes."

Original CD & Collector Notes The original 2006 CD release on Metal Blade Records is the definitive version for many fans of the mid-2000s metalcore era.

  • Identification: The standard US edition features the catalog number 3984-14574-2 on the spine.

  • The Special Edition: A limited edition Digipak (Catalog: 3984-14577-2) was also released, featuring a bonus DVD titled "The Making of III: In the Eyes of Fire," which includes behind-the-scenes studio footage and live performances from the 2005 Sounds of the Underground tour.

  • Mastering: The CD was mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound, providing a massive, punchy soundscape that highlights Terry Date’s signature "thick" drum and guitar production.

  • International Variants: The Australian/New Zealand version was released via Stomp Pty Ltd (Catalog: MB014), and a Japanese version included exclusive bonus content.
