Description

The Sex Pistols – Live in Atlanta (Jan 5, 1978)

Artist: The Sex Pistols

Venue: The Great Southeast Music Hall, Atlanta, GA

Date: January 5, 1978

Original Lineup: Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Steve Jones, Paul Cook

ackground: The Chaos of the US Debut The Sex Pistols' first-ever American show was a calculated media circus orchestrated by manager Malcolm McLaren. Instead of debuting in a punk stronghold like New York City, the band was sent to the deep South—specifically a 500-capacity venue located in a Piedmont Road shopping plaza. The move was designed to provoke maximum friction between the British punks and a conservative audience. On the night of the show, the crowd was a mix of curious locals, genuine punks, and a massive wall of national and international journalists.

The Performance: Raw and Technical The Atlanta show is often remembered more for its atmosphere than its musical perfection.

  • Technical Issues: The performance was plagued by equipment failures; Steve Jones' guitar cut out repeatedly, and the band had to pause frequently for tuning.

  • The "Vicious" Factor: This was Sid Vicious's first US appearance, though his bass was reportedly turned down so low in the mix it was barely audible, described by some as a "dull clumping".

  • Rotten’s Snarl: Johnny Rotten spent much of the night baiting the audience, famously asking, "Aren't we the worst thing you've ever seen?"

  • The Highlights: Despite the mess, the final sequence of "Pretty Vacant" and "Anarchy in the UK" captured the band’s raw energy.

Setlist The band played nearly the entirety of their only studio album:

  1. God Save the Queen

  2. I Wanna Be Me

  3. Seventeen

  4. New York

  5. Bodies

  6. Submission

  7. Holidays in the Sun

  8. E.M.I.

  9. No Feelings

  10. Problems

  11. Pretty Vacant

  12. Anarchy in the UK

Collector Notes & Official Release For decades, this show was only available through low-quality bootlegs like Rot N Roll or Kill The Hippies. However, an official high-quality live album titled Sex Pistols – Live In The USA 1978 (Atlanta) was released in early 2025 on Red Vinyl. Original bootleg pressings remain highly collectible for their DIY sleeves and historical significance as the "first strike" of the Pistols' ill-fated US tour.
