Background & Production Crush marked a massive "comeback" for Bon Jovi after a five-year hiatus following These Days. It was the first album the band recorded in their home state of New Jersey, specifically at Jon’s home studio, Sanctuary II. Produced by Luke Ebbin, Jon Bon Jovi, and Richie Sambora, the album was a major commercial success, largely driven by the smash hit "It's My Life," which introduced the band to a new generation of fans. Interestingly, the album went through several working titles—including Sex Sells and One Wild Night—before the band settled on Crush.

Musical Composition & Style The album successfully modernized the classic Bon Jovi stadium rock sound with a cleaner, pop-inflected production style.

  • The Global Anthem: "It's My Life" features Richie Sambora’s iconic talk-box guitar and was co-produced by pop mastermind Max Martin.

  • The Ballads: "Thank You For Loving Me" and "Save The World" continued the band’s tradition of high-drama power ballads, with the former being inspired by a line from the film Meet Joe Black.

  • Rockers & Fan Favorites: Tracks like "Just Older" and "One Wild Night" lean into the band's blue-collar rock roots, while "Captain Crash & The Beauty Queen From Mars" displays a glam-rock influence.

  • The Hidden Track: Most versions include a brief comedic snippet of the band discussing James Brown at the end of the disc, followed by the upbeat bonus track "I Could Make a Living Out of Loving You."

Original CD & Collector Notes Because Crush was a global release during the peak of the CD era, several distinct regional pressings exist.

  • US Pressing: Issued by Island Records (Catalog: 314-542 474-2). Look for the blue Island logo on the spine and disc.

  • European Pressing: Issued by Mercury (Catalog: 542 562-2). These often include "I Could Make a Living Out of Loving You" as a standard track 13.

  • Japanese Edition: Highly desirable (Catalog: PHCW 1100), as it includes the exclusive studio bonus track "Neurotica." Some Japanese variants also came with a bonus live CD titled Live From Osaka.

  • Australian Special Edition: Some copies (Catalog: 542 563-2) were released in a limited edition numbered slipcase with a bonus disc of live material.

  • Identification: Original 2000 pressings have a distinct matte finish on the booklet and "Made in USA" or "Made in UK" stamps in the hub of the disc.
