Background & ProductionFollowing a seven-year hiatus after Red, Robert Fripp reformed King Crimson with a radical new "Anglo-American" lineup. Originally intended to be called "Discipline," Fripp realized during rehearsals that the band's identity was unmistakably Crimson. Produced by Rhett Davies and King Crimson at Island Studios in London, the album discarded the symphonic mellotrons of the 70s in favor of a lean, "mechanized" sound influenced by Indonesian Gamelan, minimalism, and New Wave. This 200g reissue was cut from the 30th Anniversary masters personally approved by Robert Fripp, restoring the album's complex sonic architecture for modern high-fidelity systems.
Musical Composition & StyleThe album is defined by interlocking, cyclical guitar lines and the introduction of groundbreaking technology.
-
The "Interlocking" Guitars: Fripp and Belew pioneered a "math-rock" approach, playing fast, cross-picked lines in differing time signatures that phase in and out of sync.
-
Technological Firsts: Tony Levin introduced the Chapman Stick to a wide audience, while Bill Bruford utilized Simmons electronic drums (often eschewing cymbals) to create a dry, percussive landscape.
-
Key Tracks: Includes the frantic, animalistic guitar textures of "Elephant Talk," the hyper-kinetic "Thela Hun Ginjeet," and the ethereal instrumental "The Sheltering Sky."
-
The "Matte Kudasai" Bonus: Most modern reissues, including this one, feature an Alternative Mix of "Matte Kudasai" as a bonus track, which restores a Fripp guitar part that was removed from previous "Definitive Edition" remasters.
Original Pressing & Collector Notes While 1981 originals (EG Records) are prized for history, the 200g reissue is widely considered the "reference" version for its silent noise floor.
-
Identification: Look for the Discipline Global Mobile (DGM) logo and catalog number KCLP8. The front cover features an embossed red Celtic knot and a silver hype sticker.
-
Mastering Credentials: This version was cut at Loud Mastering (often by Jason Mitchell or John Dent). Look for "JASDAFACE LOUD" or similar etchings in the runout.
-
Knotwork Controversy: The original 1981 cover used a Celtic knot design by George Bain without proper license. Later reissues, including this one, use a commissioned knot by Steve Ball that is subtly different but legally cleared.
-
Physicality: The 200-gram weight makes it significantly more rigid than the 1981
