Background & Production Springsteen's debut was recorded at the budget-friendly 914 Sound Studios in Blauvelt, New York, to stretch a small advance from Columbia Records. Produced by Mike Appel and Jim Cretecos, the sessions primarily took place in June 1972. Initially conceived as a solo folk record, Columbia executive Clive Davis requested "radio-ready" material, leading Springsteen to quickly write and record "Blinded by the Light" and "Spirit in the Night" with an early iteration of the E Street Band.
