Kiss – Hide Your Heart (7" Single)
Artist: Kiss
Title: Hide Your Heart / Betrayed
Format: 7" Vinyl Single
Original Release: October 1989
Label: Mercury (US/AUS) / Vertigo (UK/Europe)
The "Deep Dive" Details:
-
The Songwriting "Battle": This track is a collector's curiosity because four different versions were released in 1989 alone (Kiss, Ace Frehley, Molly Hatchet, and Robin Beck). The Kiss version is the definitive "Hard Rock" take, but fans often buy this 7" alongside Ace Frehley’s Trouble Walkin’ 7" to compare the two former bandmates' versions of the same Paul Stanley song.
-
The Rare UK Red Vinyl (KISS 10): There is a limited edition UK pressing on Red Vinyl. It was issued in a gatefold-style sleeve and is one of the most visually striking Kiss singles of the late 80s. If your copy is red, it carries a significant price premium over the black wax.
-
The Australian Pressing (876 146-7): The Australian release was distributed by PolyGram. Unlike the UK version which used the Vertigo "Spaceship" or "Swirl" labels, the Australian 7" typically features the Mercury "Buildings" label.
-
Check the sleeve: Some Australian copies were issued in a limited picture sleeve, while many were sold in generic PolyGram/Mercury company sleeves. A copy with the original Australian picture sleeve is much harder to find in NM condition.
-
-
The "Silver Injection" Label (UK): Some UK pressings feature a "Silver Injection" label (where the text is molded into the plastic rather than a paper label). These are often discarded by casual fans but are a specific variant for Depeche Mode and Kiss completionists who track every manufacturing change.
-
B-Side Rarity: The B-side, "Betrayed," is a Gene Simmons-led track from the Hot in the Shade album. While it’s a standard album track, the 7" mix is often noted for having a slightly different "punch" in the low end compared to the CD version, making it a favorite for "old school" Kiss listeners who prefer Gene’s bass-heavy production on vinyl.
