Deep Purple – King of Dreams (7" Single)
Artist: Deep Purple
Title: King of Dreams / Fire in the Basement
Format: 7" Vinyl Single
Original Release: October 1990
Label: RCA / BMG
Genre: Hard Rock
The "Deep Dive" Details:
-
The Joe Lynn Turner Era: This single is from the Slaves and Masters album. It is highly collectible because it represents the brief, controversial period where Joe Lynn Turner (formerly of Rainbow) replaced Ian Gillan. Many Purple completionists ignored this era at the time, making original 1990 vinyl much harder to find today than their 70s output.
-
The Australian "Sample" Pressing (105144): If you are in Australia, the catalog number is 105144. Look for the white RCA label (standard retail was black or navy). A true promo will have "SAMPLE RECORD - NOT FOR SALE" printed in small black text on the white label. These were distributed to Australian radio stations like Triple M and are exceptionally rare.
-
The "Fire in the Basement" B-Side: The B-side, "Fire in the Basement," is considered by many fans to be the "truest" Deep Purple-sounding track on the record. The 7" vinyl mastering is noted for having a much warmer, more "analog" drum sound (Ian Paice) compared to the very polished, "80s-slick" production of the CD version.
-
The "Porky" or "Townhouse" Cut: Check the runout groove. UK and European pressings often feature the Townhouse stamp. Australian pressings were mastered locally at RCA Sydney—look for a small "A1" or "B1" hand-etched near the matrix number. The Australian cut is known for being slightly "louder" to suit the radio-play requirements of the time.
-
Condition Note (The Sleeve): In Australia and the UK, this was often released in a glossy picture sleeve. Because the ink used on the black background of the "Slaves and Masters" era art was very prone to fingerprint staining and edge chipping, a copy with a "Jet Black" sleeve and no ring wear is a top-tier premium item.
