7 Inch Single

Morrissey – November Spawned A Monster (7" Single)

Artist: Morrissey

Title: November Spawned A Monster / He Knows I'd Love To See Him

Format: 7" Vinyl Single

Original Release: April 1990

Label: His Master's Voice (HMV) / Liberty (Australia)

The "Deep Dive" Details:

  • The "TY1" Matrix Detail: On original UK pressings (Catalog: POP 1623), look for the initials TY1 etched in the runout groove next to the matrix numbers (POP 1623 A-1U-1-1). This identifies the lacquer was cut by Tim Young at CBS Studios. Known as a legendary engineer, his "TY" cuts are considered the definitive sonic version for Morrissey's early solo singles.

  • The Australian HMV vs. Liberty Variant: In Australia, this single was released through EMI/Liberty (Catalog: 2037347). While the UK version has the iconic pink HMV labels, some Australian copies were issued on standard Liberty "Rainbow" labels or plain black EMI labels. Australian copies with the original UK-style pink HMV labels are rarer and highly desired by local collectors wanting that "classic" look.

  • The "Monster" B-Side: The track "He Knows I'd Love To See Him" is a major rarity because it features Andy Rourke (of The Smiths) on bass. For fans, this 7" represents a rare post-Smiths collaboration that wasn't widely available until the Bona Drag compilation.

  • The "Girl Least Likely To" Omission: Note that the 7" format only contains 2 tracks. If your sleeve or label mentions "Girl Least Likely To," you actually have the 12" or CD single version misidentified, or a rare misprinted sleeve. "Girl Least Likely To" was exclusive to the 12" and CD formats at the time.

  • Sleeve Texture & "Cut-out": The original 1990 UK sleeve is a rigid, glossy card with a semi-circle thumb cut-out on the back for easy record removal. Later reissues or "box set" versions often lack this specific cut-out or use thinner, matte paper. An original "thumb-cut" glossy sleeve in Near Mint condition is the primary "collector's grade" copy.
