Artist: Clutch Title: Pitchfork & Lost Needles Album Type: Compilation Album (Vinyl Release) Original Release Date: July 12, 2005 (CD) / September 4, 2008 (First Vinyl) Label: Megaforce Records (Original) / Weathermaker Music (Reissue) Genre: Stoner Rock / Hardcore Punk / Blues Rock
Background & Production Pitchfork & Lost Needles is an essential archival release that bridges the gap between Clutch's raw, punk-indebted beginnings and their later status as stoner rock icons. The compilation primarily gathers their out-of-print early work, specifically the entire four-track Pitchfork 7" (1991) and tracks from the Passive Restraints EP (1992). It also includes rare demos from the Transnational Speedway League era and unreleased session outtakes from the Robot Hive/Exodus sessions (recorded circa 2005). The album serves as a sonic timeline, showing the band’s evolution from "viscous hardcore" to the groove-heavy "Pure Rock Fury" sound they are known for today.
Musical Composition & Style The album is a gritty, loud, and varied collection that highlights the band's versatility over 15 years.
-
The "Pitchfork" Tracks: Songs like "Wicker" and "Arcadia" feature a much faster, more aggressive vocal style from Neil Fallon, reminiscent of early 90s post-hardcore and Fugazi.
-
The Demos: Includes "Passive Restraints" and "Milk of Human Kindness" demos. Many fans prefer these versions for their raw, unpolished energy compared to the studio versions on Transnational Speedway League.
-
The "Robot Hive" Sessions: Tracks like "What Would a Wookie Do?" and "Bottoms Up, Socrates" showcase the band's mastery of the bluesy, Hammond organ-driven groove (featuring Mick Schauer).
-
Personnel: Features the unchanging core of Neil Fallon, Tim Sult, Dan Maines, and Jean-Paul Gaster, with Scott Crawford and Mark Stanley contributing additional guitars on the earliest tracks.
Vinyl Pressing & Collector Notes Vinyl copies of this compilation were scarce for years, leading to high secondary market prices before the 2017 and 2025 reissues.
-
The 2008 First Press (Megaforce): Released as a "Black and Red" split vinyl (Catalog: MEGA2003V). This is the "holy grail" for many collectors, limited and often found with "Vinyl Record Guru" etchings in the runout.
-
The 2017 RSD Picture Disc: Released for Record Store Day Black Friday on the band’s own Weathermaker Music label (Catalog: WM 061). It was limited to 1,500 copies and was the third in a series of three special picture disc releases that year.
-
The 2025 Reissue: A recent 2025 "Limited Edition" picture disc reissue (August 2025) has hit the market to satisfy high demand, often identified by the same WM 061 catalog number but with updated 2025 manufacturing dates on the packaging.
-
Condition Note: Original 2008 jackets are known for being somewhat thin; finding a "Mint" copy without corner dings is a challenge. For the picture discs, ensure they are stored in poly-lined sleeves, as the original PVC sleeves can cause "outgassing" (a cloudy film) on the vinyl surface over time.
