Background & Production Technique is a landmark record that captured the spirit of the "Second Summer of Love". The band famously moved to the island of Ibiza for four months in 1988 to record, a decision prompted by Peter Hook's desire to escape "dark and horrible" London studios. While on the island, the band became deeply influenced by Balearic beat and the burgeoning acid house scene in local dance clubs. Recording was later finished in a "much more sober atmosphere" at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in Wiltshire.
Musical Composition & Style The album is a flawless integration of rock instrumentation and club-oriented electronics.
-
The Acid House Infusion: The lead single "Fine Time" is the primary example of the album's acid house influence, featuring heavy programming and experimental vocal textures.
-
Melodic Post-Punk: Despite the electronic shift, tracks like "Run" and "All The Way" maintain the band's traditional melodic post-punk sound, featuring prominent guitar work and Bernard Sumner's "breezy" vocals.
-
Legal Note: The song "Run" was famously subject to a lawsuit from John Denver's publisher due to similarities with "Leaving on a Jet Plane"; the case was settled with Denver receiving a co-writing credit.
-
The "Huge" Sound: Critics often highlight the production's massive drum beats and intricate layering of FM synths and acoustic instruments as a "lead instrument" for the record.
Legacy & Collector Notes Technique was the first New Order album to reach number one on the UK charts. For vinyl collectors, the original 1989 Factory Records UK pressing (FACT 275) is iconic for its Peter Saville and Trevor Key designed sleeve, which features a bronze garden statue. Some original copies also included a "NEW ORDER Technique" sticker on the front sleeve. High-quality 180-gram remasters were released in 2009 and 2015, featuring newly remastered audio while maintaining the original inner bags and labels. It is an essential item for any Shopify store specializing in the Factory Records legacy, Manchester's rave history, or the evolution of alternative dance.
