Description

Released on June 8, 1992, Angel Dust is the fourth studio album by Faith No More. It is widely regarded as one of the most important records in the history of alternative metal. After the massive commercial success of The Real Thing, the band (and specifically vocalist Mike Patton) decided to move in a much darker, more experimental, and confrontational direction.

Produced by Matt Wallace, the album is a dense collage of heavy metal, funk, avant-garde samples, and industrial noise.

The Contrast of the Cover

The artwork perfectly represents the music's duality:

  • The Front: A beautiful, soft-focus image of a Great Egret.

  • The Back: A gruesome photo of a cow hanging in a meat locker. Bassist Billy Gould noted that this was a deliberate "preview" of the music—blending the beautiful with the sick. Even the title, Angel Dust, was chosen because it sounded like a "beautiful name for a hideous drug."

  • Key Tracks and Writing Styles

    • "Midlife Crisis": The lead single and the most "commercial" track on the record. It famously features a drum sample from Simon & Garfunkel’s "Cecilia." Mike Patton once mentioned the song was partially inspired by observing the public image of Madonna at the time.

    • "Land of Sunshine": A chaotic opener where Patton pulled the lyrics directly from fortune cookies and questions from a Church of Scientology personality test.

    • "Be Aggressive": Written entirely by keyboardist Roddy Bottum, this track features a high school cheerleader chant juxtaposed with provocative lyrics. It became a live staple for its jarring energy.

    • "Everything's Ruined": A fan favorite that balances a soaring, melodic chorus with heavy, syncopated verses. It is often cited as the track that best bridges their old sound with their new, experimental side.

    • "Jizzlobber": One of the heaviest songs in their catalog, largely written by guitarist Jim Martin. It ends with a haunting pipe organ outro that shifts the record into a completely different atmosphere.
