Supertramp - Brother Where You Bound (Promo Vinyl)

Artist: Supertramp Title: Brother Where You Bound Format: Vinyl LP (Promotional Edition) Original Release: 1985 Label: A&M Records Genre: Progressive Rock / Art Rock

The Deep Dive Details:

  • The Audiophile Translucent Wax: Many promotional copies of this album (especially the US Europadisk pressings) were pressed on high-quality Quiex II or similar translucent vinyl. If you hold the record up to a strong light bulb and it appears brown or purple instead of solid black, you have the high-fidelity audiophile version. This is a massive selling point for collectors.

  • The David Gilmour Connection: The title track is a 16-minute epic that features a long guitar solo by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. For your listing, emphasizing the "Gilmour Promo" status is essential, as Pink Floyd completionists hunt for this specific high-grade pressing to hear his solo in the best possible analog quality.

  • The Gold Promo Stamp: Most US and Australian promo copies feature a gold foil stamp on the back of the cover, usually in the top corner. It typically reads: Loaned For Promotion Only - Not For Sale - Ownership And All Rights Reserved. Copies with the stamp still crisp and not rubbed away are the most desirable.

  • Masterdisk RL (Robert Ludwig): Look in the dead wax for the MASTERDISK stamp and the initials RL. This indicates the album was mastered by Robert Ludwig, who is famous for the "Ludwig Punch." On a promo copy, the stamp combined with the first-run metal parts ensures this is the best-sounding version of the album in existence.

  • Matrix and Runout Info: Check for the DJ suffix in the runout. A common US promo matrix is: SP-05014-A-INT-DJ. In Australia, the catalog number is L 38343. Look for the white promo labels or a gold stamp on the back of the standard Festival/A&M sleeve.

  • The Embossed Cover: The original 1985 promo sleeves feature heavy embossing on the colorful shapes of the cover art. Later reissues and club editions are often flat. If you can feel the texture of the shapes when you run your fingers over the sleeve, it is the authentic first-run promo jacket.
