Artist: Steve Miller Band Title: Fly Like An Eagle Album Type: Ninth Studio Album (Original Vinyl Release) Original Release Date: May 14, 1976 Label: Capitol Records (Catalog: ST-11497) Genre: Space Rock / Blues Rock / Pop Rock
Background & Production Fly Like An Eagle was the commercial breakthrough that transformed the Steve Miller Band from San Francisco psychedelic staples into global arena-rock stars. After a multi-year hiatus following The Joker, Miller regrouped and recorded nearly 25 tracks in 1975, eventually splitting the material between this album and its successor, Book of Dreams. Produced by Miller himself, the record is famous for its "high-tech" atmospheric production, featuring early synthesizer experiments (ARP Odyssey) blended with rootsy blues and bluegrass. In 2025, the album was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its cultural significance.
Musical Composition & Style The album is a diverse tapestry of genres, held together by spacey transitions and radio-ready hooks.
-
Major Hits: Includes the Title Track, "Take the Money and Run," and "Rock’n Me" (which was written as a deliberate crowd-pleaser for a British tour).
-
Sonic Texture: Known for its "Space Intro" that uses shimmering synths to set a trippy tone, a recurring motif throughout the record.
-
Eclectic Range: Moves from the bluegrass stomp of "Dance, Dance, Dance" to the psychedelic-folk of "Wild Mountain Honey" and the raw blues harmonica of James Cotton on "Sweet Maree."
-
Cover Songs: Includes a soul-inflected version of Sam Cooke’s "You Send Me" and a rock-revivalist take on K.C. Douglas’s "Mercury Blues."
Original Pressing & Collector Notes The original 1976 US pressing is widely available, but specific sonic characteristics make certain copies more desirable.
-
Identification: Look for the standard orange Capitol label or the later "purple" label for late-70s represses. The original US catalog number is ST-11497.
-
The "Kendun" Mastering: Many audiophiles seek out original pressings with "KENDUN" stamped in the runout (dead wax), as these were mastered at Kendun Recorders and are known for superior dynamic range and clarity.
-
The Hendrix Guitar: The album cover features Miller holding a left-handed Fender Stratocaster that was originally ordered by Jimi Hendrix. Miller bought it after Hendrix’s death and re-strung it for right-handed play; the guitar was unfortunately stolen shortly after the album's release.
-
High-End Reissues: Collectors often chase the 1979 Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) half-speed master, which is considered by many to be the definitive sounding version of this record.
