Artist: Sunnyboys Title: Get Some Fun Album Type: Third Studio Album (Original Vinyl Release) Original Release Date: April 1984 Label: Mushroom Records (Catalog: RML 53129) Genre: Power Pop / Alternative Rock / Post-Punk

Background & Production Recorded in the United Kingdom during a period of significant internal strain, Get Some Fun is the final studio album from the Sunnyboys' original 1980s run. Produced by Nick Garvey (formerly of The Motors) and recorded at Ridge Farm Studios in Surrey, the album’s title was famously ironic; the band was physically exhausted and dealing with Jeremy Oxley's declining mental health. Despite the difficult circumstances, the sessions produced a more musically diverse and confident sound than their previous records, though the band and fans initially felt the "slicker" 80s production lacked the warmth of their debut.

Musical Composition & Style The album represents a shift toward a darker, heavier sound while maintaining the band's signature melodic power-pop core.

  • Major Hits: Includes the singles "Show Me Some Discipline," "Love in a Box," and "Comes As No Surprise."

  • Lyrical Depth: Tracks like "Show Me Some Discipline" and "The Stooge" (written and sung by Peter Oxley) offer a more introspective and sometimes somber look at the band's reality.

  • Psychedelic Touches: Features swirling, more experimental textures on "Love in a Box" and "Cat Walk," showcasing the band's growth beyond standard garage rock.

  • Personnel: The classic lineup remains intact: Jeremy Oxley (Vocals/Guitar), Peter Oxley (Bass), Richard Burgman (Guitar), and Bil Bilson (Drums).

Original Pressing & Collector Notes The 1984 original pressing is a highly collectible artifact of the Australian post-punk era, often found in varying degrees of condition.

  • Identification: Look for the Mushroom Records label with the catalog number RML 53129. Original US or international pressings are rare; most copies are the Australian first press.

  • Packaging: The original release features a single-pocket sleeve with a black-and-white printed inner sleeve containing credits and band photography. The cover art features the band in a distinctive, stylized portrait.

  • Vinyl Quality: 1984 Mushroom pressings are generally solid, though the mix reflects the era's preference for bright, high-end frequencies and heavy gated-reverb on the drums.

  • Market Rarity: While not as expensive as their self-titled debut, a "Near Mint" original with the inner sleeve intact is considered a rare find and a "must-have" for Sunnyboys completionists.

  • The 2015 Reissue: A remastered version was released by Feel Presents in 2015 as a double CD/digital set, but the original 1984 vinyl remains the definitive analog experience.
