The "Deep Dive" Details:

  • The "Sid and Nancy" Connection: This track was originally recorded for the soundtrack of the film Sid and Nancy. Because it features Cait O'Riordan on lead vocals (rather than Shane MacGowan), it is a distinct departure for the band. The promo is highly sought after by collectors who focus on the "Cait era" before she left the band to marry Elvis Costello.

  • The Rare Australian "Sample" (BUY 243): In Australia, the single was released through Stiff Records/Festival. Look for the "Sample Record - Not For Sale" sticker or the factory overprint on the yellow/black Stiff label. Australian Stiff promos are notoriously difficult to find because Festival Records had very tight distribution for "niche" Irish punk acts in the mid-80s.

  • The "Parting Glass" B-Side: The B-side is the traditional Irish song "The Parting Glass." This is considered one of Shane MacGowan’s finest vocal performances. On the 7" promo, the mastering is often "hotter" than the soundtrack version, giving the acoustic instruments and Shane’s raspy vocals more presence and grit.

  • The "Townhouse" Master: Check the runout groove for the "TOWNHOUSE" stamp. Mastering at London's Townhouse Studios ensured that the 7" maintained high fidelity despite the "wall of sound" production typical of mid-80s Stiff Records releases.

  • The 1995 Re-Recording Confusion: Important: Do not confuse this 1986 original with the 1995 version featuring Shane MacGowan and Sinéad O'Connor. The 1986 promo features the original Cait O'Riordan vocal and is the version "purist" Pogues fans hunt for. The 1986 label will have the catalog number BUY 243, whereas the 1995 version will be on the ZTT label.
