Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (Australian Pressing)
Artist: Iron Butterfly Title: In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida Format: Vinyl LP Original Australian Release: 1968 Label: Atlantic Catalog Number: SAL-933,002 Genre: Psychedelic Rock / Hard Rock
The Deep Dive Details:
-
The Mono vs. Stereo Rare Finds: In 1968, Australia was one of the few places still pressing dedicated Mono versions alongside Stereo. The Stereo version uses the SAL-933,002 catalog number, while the incredibly rare Mono version uses AL-33,002. If you have the Mono copy, it is a high-value piece for collectors who prefer the punchier, non-panned drum sound.
-
The Flipback Cover: True first pressings in Australia feature a front-laminated flipback sleeve. The edges of the front cover artwork wrap around to the back and are glued down in three distinct "flaps." Later 1970s reissues moved to a standard non-flipback, non-laminated jacket.
-
The Green Atlantic Label: Look for the bright green Atlantic label. In the US, this album was famously on the purple/tan or yellow ATCO label, but the Australian first press was issued on the primary Atlantic label. The text at the bottom should state: Manufactured in Australia by Festival Records Pty. Limited.
-
Matrix and Runout Info: Check the dead wax for the hand-etched matrix numbers: Side A: MX-27763 / SAL-933002-1 Side B: MX-27764 / SAL-933002-2 The MX prefix is the definitive mark of a Festival Records Sydney lacquer cut.
-
The Termination Misprint: Check the back cover tracklisting. Many early Australian copies feature a typo where track A4 is listed as Terminaton (missing the second 'i'). This was corrected on later runs, making the misprinted sleeve a marker for the very first batch of covers off the press.
-
Side Two - The 17-Minute Journey: Unlike many other 60s records, Side Two of this LP consists entirely of the title track. Because of the long duration and heavy organ/drum solo, these grooves are very shallow. Australian pressings are known for being particularly "noisy" if they have even minor scuffs, so a "Visual VG+" or better copy is highly sought after by audiophiles.
