Background & Production Scarsick is the sixth studio album by Swedish progressive visionaries Pain of Salvation. Conceived by mastermind Daniel Gildenlöw, the album is a thematic successor to their 2000 masterpiece The Perfect Element, Pt. I. Recorded at Oceanbound Studios, this album is famous for being one of the most polarizing releases in the band's history. Gildenlöw took over bass duties following the departure of Kristoffer Gildenlöw, and the album’s sound shifted toward a more raw, contemporary, and often satirical style that critiqued modern society, capitalism, and global politics.

Musical Composition & Style The album is a wild departure from their symphonic roots, blending aggressive metal with disco, rap, and funk elements.

  • Genre-Bending: Tracks like "Spit Forth the World" feature heavy, jagged riffs, while "Disco Queen" is a surreal 70s-influenced track that remains a live favorite despite its controversial reception.

  • The "Rap" Influence: Gildenlöw experiments with rhythmic, rap-style vocal deliveries on the title track "Scarsick," highlighting the album's urban, gritty concept.

  • Prog Epic: The closing track "Enter Rain" offers a return to the band's emotive, atmospheric progressive metal roots, serving as a dark, melancholic finale.

  • Lyrical Concept: The "Scarsick" protagonist (also the "He" from The Perfect Element) navigates a world he finds increasingly disgusting and superficial.

Original CD & Collector Notes The original 2007 release on Inside Out Music is the standard version, but there are a few variations to look for.

  • Standard Edition: Housed in a standard jewel case with a booklet featuring distressed, collage-style artwork that matches the album's gritty themes.

  • Limited Edition Digipak: (Catalog: IOMCD 268 / 0504190) This version includes an enhanced section with a band interview and a wallpaper gallery.

  • The Artwork: The cover art is notably minimalist compared to their previous work, featuring a "worn-out" aesthetic with a small, centered icon.

  • Identification: Look for the Inside Out / SPV logos. Original pressings were often distributed via SPV in Europe and Century Media in the US.
