Talking Heads – Speaking In Tongues
Artist: Talking Heads
Title: Speaking In Tongues
Album Type: Fifth Studio Album
Original Release Date: June 1, 1983
Label: Sire Records
Genre: New Wave / Funk / Art Rock / Pop Rock
Background & Production Speaking In Tongues marked the band's major commercial breakthrough and a significant stylistic shift following their experimental trilogy with producer Brian Eno. After a three-year hiatus—during which members pursued various side projects like Tom Tom Club—the band reconvened to self-produce this record. Recording began in 1982 at Blank Tape Studios in New York, with final overdubbing and mixing taking place at Compass Point Studios in Nassau and Sigma Sound in New York. The album captured the band at their most fluid and dance-oriented, successfully bridging the gap between cerebral art-pop and deep funk.
Musical Composition & Style The album is defined by propulsive rhythms and a direct, groove-oriented sound that paved the way for the legendary Stop Making Sense tour.
-
The Massive Hit: "Burning Down the House" became their highest-charting US single, featuring a driving beat and iconic "funky stabs".
-
Funk Perfection: Tracks like "Girlfriend Is Better" and "Making Flippy Floppy" showcase dense, syncopated layers influenced by P-Funk and early electro-funk.
-
Global Textures: "Slippery People" utilizes a gospel-style call-and-response vocal, while "I Get Wild/Wild Gravity" leans into jittery dub reggae rhythms.
-
The Naive Masterpiece: The album closes with "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)," a tender, beloved love song written while the band switched instruments (Byrne on guitar, Weymouth on synth).
-
Expanded Lineup: The recording features prominent guest musicians, including percussionist Raphael DeJesus, backing vocalist Nona Hendryx, and keyboardist Bernie Worrell.
Legacy & Vinyl Collector Notes Speaking In Tongues is a high-demand title for vinyl collectors due to its iconic artwork and various pressings.
-
The Rauschenberg Edition: A limited edition of 50,000 copies was released featuring a complex "multiple" design by artist Robert Rauschenberg. It consisted of a clear vinyl disc housed in a clear plastic case with three rotating transparent wheels printed with stencils.
-
Byrne Design: Subsequent and standard copies featured the more familiar artwork designed by David Byrne.
-
Original Pressings: 1983 US pressings were often cut at Sterling Sound and pressed at plants like Winchester or Jacksonville.
-
High-Fidelity Reissues: Modern 180g vinyl reissues (such as the 2013 version) are highly regarded for their clarity and transient punch, though audiophiles often seek out "Hot Stamper" vintage copies for the best 3D soundstage.
