Background & Production The Tomorrow EP is the explosive debut that launched three teenagers from Newcastle, New South Wales, into global superstardom. Recorded when the band members—Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies, and Chris Joannou—were just 15 years old, the title track originally won a national demo competition for the SBS network and the radio station Triple J. This version was re-recorded at Festival Studios in Sydney with producer Phil McKellar. The EP’s massive success in Australia triggered a worldwide bidding war, eventually leading to the band signing with the Sony-affiliated label Murmur and setting the stage for their multi-platinum debut album, Frogstomp.
Musical Composition & Style Tomorrow is a quintessential 90s grunge anthem, characterized by the "loud-quiet-loud" dynamic popularized by the Seattle scene.
-
The Hit Single: "Tomorrow" features Daniel Johns' snarling, precocious vocals and a heavy, melodic guitar riff that drew immediate comparisons to Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. The song spent six weeks at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart and later topped the US Billboard Modern Rock tracks.
-
The B-Sides: The EP includes tracks like "Acid Rain" and "Blind," which showcase the band’s raw, heavy metal roots and their ability to craft moody, sludge-influenced alt-rock that resonated with the angst of the "Generation X" era.
-
Authenticity: Despite their youth, the band’s tight musicianship and the gritty production made them leaders of the post-grunge movement, proving that the "Seattle sound" had found a powerful second home in Australia.
Legacy & Collector Notes For collectors of Australian rock, the original 1994 Murmur pressing of the Tomorrow EP (often found in a slimline CD case or as a 7" vinyl rarity) is a historical artifact. It captures the exact moment "Silverchair-mania" began. In 1995, the band swept the ARIA Awards, and "Tomorrow" remains one of the most played songs in the history of Australian rock radio. It is an essential inventory item for any store specializing in 90s Alternative, Grunge, or the history of Australian music.
