Artist: Neil Young Title: Tonight's the Night Album Type: Sixth Studio Album (Original Vinyl Release) Original Release Date: June 20, 1975 Label: Reprise Records (Catalog: MS 2221) Genre: Roots Rock / Blues Rock / Folk Rock
Background & Production Recorded in a series of late-night, tequila-fueled sessions in 1973, Tonight's the Night is the raw, haunting heart of Neil Young's "Ditch Trilogy." The album was a direct response to the heroin overdose deaths of roadie Bruce Berry and Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten. Though finished in 1973, Reprise Records delayed its release for two years, terrified by its dark, unpolished, and "uncommercial" sound. Recorded primarily at Studio Instrument Rentals (S.I.R.) in Hollywood, the performance is famously loose, with Young’s voice cracking and the band (The Santa Monica Flyers) playing with a desperate, ragged intensity that has since made it a critics' favorite.
Musical Composition & Style The album is a somber, booze-soaked eulogy that redefined the "confessional" rock album.
-
The "Waterface" Connection: The lyrics and liner notes are riddled with cryptic references to "Waterface" (believed to be a nickname for Danny Whitten).
-
Key Tracks: Includes the title track (Parts 1 & 2), the heartbreaking "Borrowed Tune" (which utilizes the melody from Lady Jane by The Rolling Stones), and "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" (a live 1970 recording featuring Danny Whitten on lead vocals).
-
The Atmosphere: Heavily influenced by the grief and substances of the era, the record captures the "mid-70s hangover" of the hippie dream.
-
Personnel: Features the Santa Monica Flyers: Ben Keith (Pedal Steel), Nils Lofgren (Guitar/Piano), Billy Talbot (Bass), and Ralph Molina (Drums).
Original Pressing & Collector Notes Original 1975 copies are highly distinctive and carry several unique physical "Easter eggs."
-
The Black Labels: While Reprise usually used tan labels, the first pressing of Tonight's the Night features unique black labels to match the album's funereal theme.
-
Runout Etchings: Look for the handwritten messages in the dead wax: "Hello Waterface" on Side A and "Goodbye Waterface" on Side B.
-
Packaging: The original cover is a textured, matte-finish gatefold. It was printed on a blotter-like paper stock that is notoriously prone to "yellowing" or foxing over time.
-
The Hidden Inserts: A true "Complete" original must include:
-
A black-and-white printed inner sleeve.
-
A scarce, fold-out "newspaper" style insert containing a long, rambling letter and surrealist imagery (including a photo of Roy Orbison.
